Genetics: Mendelian Concepts Simulation

Kit #70
$135.15

This activity allows students to collect data that show similar patterns to those Mendel discovered. Using specially designed equipment, students “rediscover” the principles of genetics. The unique materials produce random genotype combinations that are statistically consistent with those found when studying living organisms.

Scientific Concepts

•Traits are influenced by alleles located on chromosomes.
•Each organism has sets of paired alleles (genotype) that help determine its physical traits (phenotype.)
•Alleles come in two versions (often represented with upper- and lower-case letters) and genotypes can be homozygous (e.g. XX or xx) or heterozygous (e.g. Xx).
•Each offspring gets one allele randomly from each parent.
KEY VOCABULARY: Alleles, Chromosomes, Deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA), Dihybrid, Dominant, Genotype, Incomplete dominance, Inherited, Phenotype, Recessive
