Feeding the World

Food production and consumption uses a tremendous amount of natural resources and have a huge impact on the environment. In this unit from the year-long SEPUP course Science and Sustainability, students investigate the chemical nature of food, chemical and biological processes involved in food production, and techniques for increasing availability of food. 


Content in Feeding the World is organized into activities, as follows:

12.1. Soil Nutrients and Fertilizer Students test the nitrogen content of two different soils and determine how well each soil absorbs nitrogen from fertilizer.

12.3. Soil Components and Properties Students test soils to investigate the soil characteristics.
12.4. Mineral Mania Students analyze nutritional labels from foods to identify necessary nutrients.
13.1. In and Out Nutrients Students use microscopes to observe and compare plant and animal cells.
13.2. Inside the Membrane A reading on the development of cell theory and the structure of different types of cells.
13.3. Moving Through Membranes Students use plastic tubing to explore the movement of substances across membranes.
13.4. Nature’s Crossing Guards A reading on the role of the membrane in controlling the chemical environment in a cell.
14.1. What’s It Made Of? Students review of the structure of the atom and investigate the molecular structure of nutrients using the periodic table.
14.2. Exploring the Physical Properties of Elements Students test and then compare the physical properties of five elements.
14.3. The Origins of the Periodic Table A reading on the historical development of the periodic table of elements.
14.4. Specific Heat and Atomic Structure Students use data to determine the relationship between an element’s specific heat and its atomic structure.
15.1. Modeling Molecules Students explore the use of models to make molecules.
15.2. Trends in the Periodic Table Students construct molecular models and use the periodic table to predict chemical properties of elements.
15.3. Patterns in the Properties Students use Element Cards to sort and classify chemical elements.
15.4. Building Blocks of Chemical Change Students construct molecular models to observe patterns in bonding between reactants and products.
16.1. Do Plants Pass Gas? Students measure the rate of carbon dioxide production in the Elodea plant.
16.2. Highlights From the History of Botany A reading on the historical evidence that leads to the modern understanding of photosynthesis.
16.3. Where’s It Happening? Students observe the cell structures found in Elodea cells.
17.1. Modeling Inheritance Students create a model of how genes are passed from one generation to another.
17.2. Genes and Traits A reading on Mendel and the principles of genetics.
17.3. Rearranging Rice Genes Students use Allele Cards to explore patterns of inheritance.
17.4. Generation Next: Crossing the Offspring Students examine Corn Ear Cards to gather data and investigate patterns of inheritance.
18.1. Double-Crossing Corn Students examine Corn Ear Cards to investigate traits determined by multiple genes.
18.2. Breeding Rice Students use Allele Cards to apply their knowledge of genetics to the breeding of a desirable strain of rice.
18.3. Breeding Crops With Desirable Traits A reading on the use of selective breeding and genetic engineering to produce desirable crops.
18.4. Cattle Calls Students use Cattle Cards to make choices concerning breeding and genetically engineering cattle for different needs.
19.1. Genes, Chromosomes, and DNA A reading on the physical structure and location of genes within cells.
19.2. Modeling DNA Structure Students construct models of the subunits of DNA and the double helix structure of DNA.
19.3. Fight the Blight A reading on how recombinant DNA was used to produce new varieties of rice.
20.1. The Clone Zone Students research and debate issues surrounding genetic engineering and cloning in food productions.
