Color and Spectrum Module (no light stations)

module #P120

During the seven activities in this module, students use diffraction gratings and make a spectroscope to separate, describe, and understand the spectrum of light from a variety of sources. They also learn that light can be separated into many wavelengths and study how light interacts with color filters, how colored light can change the “color” of objects and how combinations of different colored light beams produce other colors, including “white.” Using luminescent material, students also study absorption, emission and conservation of energy. The activities in this module (and in the related P110 and P130 modules) were developed at the University of Kentucky and include materials designed for seamless use with LAB-AIDS® Light Stations. If you’ve purchased the P110 Investigating Light Module, you can purchase the extension package P120A to avoid getting duplicate materials. LIGHT STATIONS NOT INCLUDED.

Investigations: 1 Separating and describing the spectrum of white light 2 Making and using a spectroscope to discover properties of light 3 Classifying lights at home and school by their spectra 4 Studying how light interacts with color filters 5 Investigating how colored light changes the “color” of colored objects 6 Combining colored light beams to make white light and other colors 7 Using luminescent material to study absorption, emission and conservation of energy

  • Light comes in many wavelengths, each of which determines its color.
  • Different colors of light can be combined to form other colors, including “white.”
  • Different colors (wavelengths) of light carry different amounts of energy.
