Contaminants and the Water Cycle

Kit #434S
$95.45
Contaminants and the Water Cycle

Students model the phenomenon of global water movement as driven by the Sun and gravity. Students construct an explanation of the water cycle and the cycling of matter as a result of a hands-on investigation. They consider how the planet’s systems interact over various time and spatial scales. They use the crosscutting concept of scale, proportion, and quantity to discuss how we can study water movement in the water cycle by using a model of a system too large to observe all at once.

Scientific Concepts

  • Water circulates through the earth’s crust, oceans, and atmosphere in the water cycle. It evaporates from the surface, rises, cools at higher elevations, condenses as rain or snow, and falls to the surface where it collects in lakes, oceans, and rock layers underground
  • Water can contain chemical or biological contaminants
  • Water can be contaminated by wastewater
  • Creating models is one way to understand and communicate scientific information
  • Disciplinary Core Ideas
    •MS-ESS2.A Earth’s Materials and Systems
•MS-ESS2.C The Roles of Water in Earth’s Surface Processes
