Professional Development

To teach is to make a life long commitment to learning--for our students and for ourselves. Teachers must work hard to stay abreast of new science content and pedagogy, which is why most states typically require ongoing professional development for re-certification every five years. Our research and evaluation partners include college and university staff with many years of experience - seasoned professionals who have helped improve the effectiveness of small local programs and larger national programs alike, and have been published in national, peer-reviewed journals.


Nena Bloom, Center for Science Teaching and Learning, Northern Arizona University
Nena is an evaluator of a number of STEM initiatives at the K-12 and higher education levels. Ms. Bloom has advanced education in the life sciences (MS, UC Davis, 1997) and taught science, science education and social studies for over ten years at the secondary and post-secondary levels. She is particularly interested in issues of equity and reformed teaching efforts in science education.

Kathryn Sloane Weissbaum, Independent Consultant
Kathryn has collaborated with teachers, administrators, and academic researchers to design useful and effective evaluations in science education for over 20 years.  She earned her doctorate in educational research and evaluation at the University of Chicago and taught in the graduate educational research programs at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  She co-founded (with M. Wilson) the Berkeley Evaluation and Assessment Project (BEAR) and has worked with numerous curriculum development and teacher enhancement programs at the Lawrence Hall of Science, including SEPUP projects on curriculum evaluation, embedded assessment, and teacher moderation groups.  Dr. Weisbaum is well-versed in qualitative and quantitative methodologies and has designed evaluations ranging from intensive case studies to randomized field trials, in single classrooms and national multi-site programs.  She enjoys working with people in all areas of education and is committed to helping educators get the information they need to enhance their practice and improve opportunities for student learning.
