The Electromagnetic Spectrum

In this multi-day, three-part activity, students begin by sharing their current understanding of light and then observing how visible light can be separated into different colors. In Part B they conduct an investigation to further explore the visible spectrum by using unique Lab-Aids equipment to collect evidence that indicates that different colors of light carry different amounts of energy. The follow-up reading introduces students to the classic experiments that established the existence of infrared and ultraviolet radiation. Students learn about the electromagnetic spectrum, applications of infrared energy, and ways that humans have used electromagnetic energy to extend their sensory capabilities.

Scientific Concepts

  • When light shines on an object, it is transmitted through the object depending on the object’s material and the frequency (color) of the light.
  • A wave model of light is useful for explaining brightness and color.
  • Because light can travel through space, it cannot be a matter wave, like sound or water waves.
  • The Sun’s energy arrives as light with a range of wavelengths, consisting of visible light, infrared, and ultraviolet radiation.
  • Technology influences society through its products and processes.
  • Students evaluate and synthesize information from text.
  • Students develop conclusions based on evidence and reasoning.
  • Key Vocabulary: electromagnetic spectrum, electromagnetic wave, evidence, frequency, infrared, ultraviolet, visible light spectrum, wave, wavelength
