Concepts of Classification

In this Lab-Aids® kit students sort and classify figures of various shapes and colors to gain a sense of order and an understanding that things (organisms, rocks, materials, etc) can be arranged into groups based on physical characteristics, or traits. Students discover for themselves that there are various kinds of characteristics and that these characteristics can be used in grouping, identifying, and comparing objects. They then apply the understanding of classification gained through experience with the figures to actual classification systems used in the sciences.

Scientific Concepts

•One way to gather data is through direct observations. Accurate and complete observations are important for making conclusions about the natural world.
•Classifications systems can vary based on the characteristics used to differentiate organisms.
•Classification systems help scientists organize and identify the two–three million known species.
•Specific characteristics define the major phyla.
•Space objects are grouped into categories by such characteristics as size, composition, and motion in space.
•Elements have characteristic physical and chemical properties. Substances often are placed in categories or groups if they react in similar ways; metals are an example of such a group.
