Identification of Chemical Reactions
A very important outcome of studying science is to acquire the ability to make and interpret observations. Students initially observe and describe seven different solutions. They then combine pairs of these chemical solutions and use their observations to determine whether or not a chemical reaction took place. Finally, they test an unknown solution and use their previous observations to determine the chemical composition of the unknown.

Scientific Concepts
•Each pure substance has characteristic physical and chemical properties (for any bulk quantity under given conditions) that can be used to identify it. Substances react chemically in characteristic ways.
•In a chemical process, the atoms that make up the original substances are regrouped into different molecules, and these new substances have different properties from those of the reactants.
•Some chemical reactions release energy, others store energy.
•Substances are made from different types of atoms, which combine with one another in various ways. Atoms form molecules that range in size from two to thousands of atoms.
Key Vocabulary: (optional terms in parenthesis)
chemical composition (decomposition reaction), chemical formula (displacement reaction), chemical reaction (neutralization reaction), energy (oxidation-reduction reaction), product (precipitate), reactant (synthesis reaction)
