Students encounter a variety of technologies that make use of waves. They also investigate the harmful effects of certain waves and methods to mitigate the risks associated with these waves.
Students generate and answer questions such as: How can loud sounds cause hearing loss? How can sunlight damage eyes? How do waves transfer energy? How can waves be used to transmit information?

Issues and Science was developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science in response to the need for high quality, three dimensional, phenomena driven curriculum. Quick details from this unit:
- Anchoring phenomenon: Waves can be both helpful and harmful. Examples explored include information transmitted by waves, hearing loss due to loud music, and eye damage from looking at the sun.

Hardbound, high-quality student books are designed to last the length of an adoption for use year after year. Unlike a traditional texbook, the Student Book does not provide science content through reading and questions. Instead students are encouraged to question, investigate, and analyze in each of the heavily field-tested activities.
